There are some words that sometimes appear in the vocabulary and you don’t know where they come from. And in sex this is much more common than you might think. A good example is the word voyeurism. What would that be? Translated from French, it means “he who sees”.

This is a practice that basically consists of an individual seeking and obtaining sexual pleasure through observation. Without many details it seems to be a strange practice. Moreover, it remains a taboo when talking about sexuality.

Being discovered is one of the most frequent fantasies among individuals. Besides increasing the pleasure of orgasm, the risk increases the production of dopamine.

However, this is how the basic neurotransmitter in the excitement becomes high.  Among young people, many fantasies surround the practice of sex in public places. In this example, it is called dogging and the adrenaline it generates is not a problem if it is discovered.

On the other hand, Voyeurism has long been present in humanity. People involved in this practice often feel free to attend the sex act.

To touch or not to touch the other

It depends on one’s will. However, the main characteristic of this practice is the fact that those who are watching (voyeur) are only watching.  Generally, the voyeur does not interact with the people who are having sex at the moment. In short, in this aspect there is the observer and the observed.

This practice can be known as prying eyes. However, because of its intriguing characteristic that can lead to the discontent of those who do not understand this practice, there is also its portrayal in the arts. Films, series, plays. There are several appearances of the debate on the subject.

One of the best known comes from the cinema. With its premiere in 1954, Alfred Hitchcock’s The Rear Window was the first film in the world to deal with the subject.

Who usually practices voyeurism?

Voyeurism is somewhat more common among males than females. Adrenaline and sexual arousal are more common among men. In them the visual sense is much more active than in women. There is a fairly common profile among fans of this sexual modality.

Those who practice it are usually sexting as well. In this case, this practice is related to the sending of images through mobile phones and social networks. And it is still a way of asserting oneself sexually.

In practice, the exploration of eroticism is a powerful and very attractive weapon. And today the art of seduction calls for much more creativity and fantasy.

Between the limit of pleasure and danger

Voyeuristic practices can be presented in various ways. The main feature is that the voyeur (or voyeurist) does not interact directly with the one being watched.

In some cases, the observer even takes the time to know that he is being watched. In fact, he may even go unnoticed depending on the situation. However, there is a limit between the practice of this adrenaline-fuelled act and perversion.

Professionals such as psychologists and psychiatrists often present a controversy surrounding the practice. It arises because often the beholder can become a bully. It is when there is talk of the absence of consent from the person being observed. This generates a debate about privacy and the possible danger of the practice becoming excessive.

When it is done with the consent of the person being observed, it is an act that does not cause problems. The moment the observation begins without the observed person’s knowledge, it is an aggravating factor. Specialists see in this act a level of perversity and of exceeding permitted limits.

Stalker, the new digital voyeur?

There are some differences between observing someone in real life and on social networks. However, there is little talk about it as such, although looking at other people’s social networks can be considered a kind of voyeurism.

Stalker is the well-known act of checking out other people’s profiles. Peeking, spying, even stalking can be terms derived from this action in the digital world. Clearly, spying is not done in the same way. In any case, the digital voyeur is characterised by looking for information about people for whom there is some interest.

Even in the digital era, companies that want to hire someone can look at profiles to find out more about the personal life of the perhaps future employee.

So voyeurism has never gone out of fashion. It changes glances, it changes perspectives. Meanwhile, the essence of this act continues to fill the ideas and imagination, creating stories, fantasies and fetishes.

We have to consider that looking and being looked at can be an art.
